Malloy Yaw Motor for GE 1.xMW platform

GE used several different motor manufacturers in production of the GE 1.5, 1.6, 1.7, and 1.8 platforms. All of these motors are made by European based companies making them expensive, long lead times, and minimal design service factor.

Malloy has worked with a motor manufacturer to design and offer a motor that will solve these problems.

  • Older GE non-ESS turbines use a 575V power supply for these motors while the newer, ESS turbines use a 690V power supply

    Problem: non-ESS turbines use 575V and ESS turbines used 690V to power the Yaw motors.

    Duplication of spares for voltage difference across sites.

    Lost time for potential mis-shipments of wrong voltage motor.

    Malloy Solution: Dual Voltage Motor

    This motor was designed from the start as a dual voltage motor, so it could be used on ESS or non-ESS turbines.

    Minimize spares across sites.

  • Through the years heaters and thermostats were added by the OEM to address problems.

    Problem: If ordering and OEM replacement motor you could get one with out the heater or thermostat that you may need.

    Shortened motor life from condensation buildup.

    Shortened motor life from overheating.

  • The OEM motors are up-rated standard motors with limits on duty cycle. Typical IEC motors have a 1.0 Service Factor leaving little room for the unexpected.

    Problems: If the run time limit, or the nameplate power rating are exceeded the motor will being to fail.

    Motor can't properly cool.

    Shortened motor life due to insulation breakdown.

    The OEM supplied motors are rated to run for 20-30 minutes.

    The OEM supplied motors have a service factor of 1.0.

    Malloy Solution: Continuous duty rated and additional service factor.

    Rated to run at full load for a full 60 minutes.

    Rated for 55°C (131°F) environment.

    Electrical service factor of 1.15.

  • The OEM motors are IEC frame motors with metric shaft and flange.

    Problems: A standard off the shelf motor cannot be used.

    These motors don't have the correct combination of kW rating and frame size.

    Most motors stocked in the US are NEMA frame motors which have different shaft and flange sizes.

    Malloy Solution: Custom built motor for power rating with correct shaft and flange dimensions.

    This motor will bolt up in place of the OEM motors with 250mm flange, and we have an adapter plate for use on the 1 application with a 200mm flange.

    This motor has the correct power rating.

  • Made in the USA.

    We have much shorter lead times than competitors.

    Highest quality.

    Employ US workers, and contribute to the US economy.

    Brake is outboard of fan and shroud.

    This ensures brake dust can not get to the bearing to cause premature failure as seen in other applications.

    This motor is less expensive than others and has many valuable upgrades.

  • This application uses 4 motors and drives that share the load to turn the yaw gear of the turbine. In applications like this, it's important that the same motor and drive are used to ensure proper load sharing.

    Problems: Multiple different motor brands may be installed on site, varying from 1035 to 1120 RPM.

    Need to spare each different version of motor depending on motor population on site.

    Malloy Solution: Standardize on Malloy Yaw Motor for all replacements.

    Replace all 4 motors in 1 turbine, keeping as spares for other turbines using the same model.
