Special Bearing Used in GE Pitch Motors

By Cory Mittleider on 8/21/17

The OEM uses an SKF 6206-2RS2/C3S1GHE in this demanding application. When replacing failed bearings used in the GE Pitch Motors it is important to be aware of the special features this bearing has (Fig. 1). This bearing is more expensive than a typical electric motor bearing, but the special features it has were selected specifically for prolonging the bearing life in this application. If you look at an alternate bearing be sure you use a bearing that has these characteristics.

Special Features

  • Viton Seals (2RS2)

    • Viton seals have a temperature rating of up to 400°F.

    • Standard motor bearings have Nitrile seals with a temperature rating of only 210°F, with brief periods of up to 250°F.

  • High Performance Krytox Grease (GHE)

    • PFPE oil with PTFE thickener

    • Useful temperature range of -33°F to 400°F.

    • Strong corrosion protection properties.

    • Extended lubrication intervals

    • Standard motor bearings have a polyurea based grease which is a compromise of price and reliability.

  • S1 Heat Stabilization (S1)

    • Bearing rings heat treated to be dimensionally stabile up to 392°F

    • Standard motor bearings dimensionally stabile to 250°F

Upgraded GE Pitch Motor Bearing

There is a version of this special bearing available to prevent electrical discharge. The ceramic version of this bearing has the same special features as the OEM part with the addition of ceramic balls.

Ceramic Upgrade Features

  • Includes same features listed above for base bearing

  • Ceramic Balls Run Cooler

    • Temperature has a large influence on grease life. Running cooler will increase grease life.

  • Electrically Insulated

    • This application also experiences electrical discharge damage. Ceramic does not conduct electricity and will prevent this damage.

    • Eliminating electrical discharge in the bearing will also lower temperature.

    • Eliminates grease burning caused by electrical discharge.

    • Eliminates metal debris in grease caused by electrical discharge.
